Dinner Disasters

Well, it's that time again-- New Years.  You can go to the store and find oodles of work out equipment and stacks of plastic containers.  I think all retail shops think we should be thinner and more organized.

I've given up on both.

Well OK, if you're going to pressure me like that-- than yes, I did cave and buy two pieces of Rubbermaids.  I have dreams of organized Legos.  It was just the one purchase though, I swear.

Anyway, one of my goals this year is to get my kids to eat food.  After visiting many peoples homes this holiday season I came to realize that my kids are mutants.  They don't eat much outside of yogurt and bread.  With that in mind I have decided to start cooking things I'd like to eat and hoping that the kids will cave and join in.

Day 1:

Chicken Pillows

Breckyn:  The bread is pretty good but the guts are nasty and I don't eat chicken.  Can I have something else?

Zoey:  It's OK.  I'll eat it if it really means that much to you.

Rugby:  Nope.  I don't like it.  What's in it?  Can I have Pop Tarts instead?

Em:  There is no way I'm eating that.  (After some persuasion he sat with a bite in his mouth for several minutes refusing to swallow.)

Day 2:

Manicotti
(which I might add is basically different shaped spaghetti)

Breckyn:  It's OK if there wasn't so much sauce.

Zoey:  I think it's pretty good.  (plate still pretty much covered with food)

Rugby:  Can I have more garlic bread?

Em:  I'm not eating this!  (After much persuasion a few bites went down.)

Day 3:

Enchiladas....

I'll keep you posted.

Tell me it's not just me?

Bribery always works. Have a yummy dessert sitting there staring at them and tell them they can only have it if they eat their dinner.

They weren't that bad here.

I have a 2 year old who refuses to eat and bribery stopped working a few months ago. Let me know if you find an answer!

It's not just you. My sister and I swear that one kid always hates the meal. Every.single.day. Ew.

I have a sign on my desk that says Organization is for people who are too lazy to look for things. As for me I once organized the boys legos. By color. And shape. Yeah that last all of two minutes after days of sorting.

Your kids and my kids would love eating dinner together! Yogurt and bread! Well....as long as the yogurt has no fruit chunks in it and the bread can't have any noticeable grain or seeds. Drives me crazy!!!

have you tried getting the kids involved in the making of the foods - not great if your hurridly trying to make dinner but if you have an afternoon spare. Its how I get mine to try new types of food, or eat ones they've refused to try before. A favourite is making different shaped bread (I cheat & let the breadmaker do the dough for me :)

Are you sure you aren't talking about one of MY kids? I'm not sure where I went wrong???? They use to eat everything when they were little now its pure torture to get them to try one bite of anything not on their approved list.
We do a "no thank you bite" at my house. You have to take one bite of everything on your plate - with out complaining (still working on the no complaining part of it) and then if you don't like it, you don't have to eat anymore of it.
However this still backfires because after all the fit throwing and threatening to send them to bed with no dinner if they don't eat one bite, on the rare occasion, they really do like the item, they still refuse to eat it based on principle - SIGH - maybe some day!

Oh my goodness! I feel so much better!!! I think my kids have survived on corndogs and chicken nuggets for the last 6 months. Oh and pizza! For a while there if they didnt like what I cooked for dinner they had to make themselves PB&J. I'm not making 2 dinners. They got really good at that. They are all on the thin side so I cant just say "fine no dinner for you then". Which so many have told me to do. Thank you for posting this. I too will start trying again.
